The Appleby Horse Fair

Staying in Carlisle

The Appleby Horse Fair is one of the oldest fairs in Britain dating back to the reign of James II who in 1685 granted a Royal Charter to the town permitting it to hold a horse fair. Since then it has been a popular annual event for traders and travellers to meet and buy and sell horses and ponies. The event is held over four days on the outskirts of the town on what is known as Fair Hill and the event is celebrated with music, folklore and street entertainment. Here you will witness horses being driven down the flashing lane; traders selling equine wares whilst down in Appleby itself horses can be seen being washed in the River Eden ready for their prospective buyers.

Dating from the time of William the Conqueror’s Doomesday Book, Carlisle was orginally Scottish and it is the only city to be added to England since the Norman Conquest. It’s location, on the strife-torn borders, made Carlisle a target for repeated sieges and capture, and today Carlisle provides memories of its turbulent past and most major characters of Anglo-Scottish history. Famous sights include Carlisle Cathedral dating from 1133, the west walls of Carlisle’s last remaining defences, Carlisle Castle and the historic Market Square.
