Bideford, Barnstaple, Lynmouth & Ilfracombe

North Devon Delights!

A scenic and largely rural region, North Devon is bordered by Exmoor National Park, renowned for its striking country and coastal views and herds of wild deer. The North Devon coastline, studded with tiny harbour-towns, excellent beaches and breathtaking cliff-top walks, is so picturesque that it has been designated “an area of outstanding natural beauty”.

Bideford is an attractive town situated on the banks of the Torridge Estuary. The old main road has a famous 24 arched bridge crossing the Torridge which links the town to its aptly named neighbour, East the Water. Bideford still has a working harbour, pleasant small streets with a variety of shops and like its larger sister town Barnstaple, it has a Pannier Market with its own Butchers Row where local farmers still bring their dairy produce to sell. During the 16th and 17th centuries Bideford was one of the busiest ports in England handling cargoes of all kinds but especially the trade in tobacco and cotton from the New World.

The Quay has recently been widened and lined with trees and it is a pleasant place to view the fishing and cargo boats as they go about their work.

All bedrooms have private bathroom, TV, direct dial telephone, tea/coffee making facilities and there is a lift. The hotel has a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere enhanced by its excellent restaurant which offers quality cuisine, whilst the lounge is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink.

Itinerary*

Monday: Travel to Bideford arriving late afternoon. Time to settle into your room before enjoying your evening meal.

Tuesday: Today is at leisure to relax and enjoy Bideford.

Wednesday: This morning we travel to the ancient market town of Barnstaple which is reputed to be one of the oldest boroughs in the United Kingdom. Today it is a thriving town with quaint alleyways, fine buildings, Parish Church, St. Anne’s Chapel Museum and the old Three Tuns Tavern. We continue to the picturesque twin town of Lynmouth, spectacularly situated on the northern edge of the Exmoor National Park. Here take the opportunity to take a ride on the ingenious water-powered lift that travels from Lynmouth, nestling at the foot of the cliffs to its sister town of Lynton, perched 500 feet above.

Thursday: A short day excursion today as we travel through Instow with its fine beaches and extensive views of the sea and the rivers Taw and Torridge. Then onwards to the seaside resort of Ilfracombe, known as the jewel of the North Devon coast. Here you will find grand Victorian villas, white-washed houses and a quaint quayside and harbour.
