The Bombay Sapphire Distillery Tour

Just the Tonic! & Stratford upon Avon

Here’s a new short break staying overnight at the 4* Apollo Hotel, near Basingstoke with dinner, bed and breakfast and visiting Laverstoke Mill, the home of the Bombay Sapphire Gin Distillery. We also spend some time in the charming riverside town of Stratford upon Avon.

There has been a mill on the Laverstoke site since at least 903 AD but the first official records show Laverstoke as being a corn mill as detailed in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1719 it was operating as a paper-mill and in the mid-18th century the site was expanded to allow for increased production.

Bombay Sapphire’s heritage began in 1761 when distiller Thomas Dakin purchased a site in Warrington with the intention of distilling gin. In 1831 the Dakin family purchased a still and adapted it to separate exotic botanicals from the neutral grain spirit, capturing the flavours of the botanicals in the vapour, a distillation process known as “vapour infusion”, and this system is still faithfully utilized by Bombay Sapphire to this day. In 2010 the Bombay Spirits Company purchased Laverstoke Mill and carefully renovated it, preserving the natural ecology and heritage of the site. During the tour visitors can explore the distillery with one of the hosts who will be on hand to answer any questions and act as a guide through the site. Discover the ten exotic botanicals in stunning glasshouses which are infused into every drop of the famous gin. Your host will then help you to discover your preferred flavour palate in the Distillery Dry Room (handy later in the Mill Bar!) n.b. Please note Laverstoke Mill is a working distillery so the owners insist that all visitors must wear suitable footwear. Guest wearing open-toed shoes, high heels, canvas shoes etc; will not be permitted to enter the Still House. The charm of Stratford upon Avon lies in the streets that were there long before “ Guliemus Shakespere” was entered in the Parish register in April 1564. Then it was a thriving market town, where merchants built fine half-timbered houses, many of which survive to this day and have become the jewel in Stratford’s crown. Famous landmarks include Shakespeare’s birthplace, the Elizabethan Knot Garden and Havard House. ***This tour is for adults only; persons aged 18 years and over only permitted.
