Cardiff, Weekend! Autumn Internationals

Coinciding with the Wales v Scotland match.

Newcomers to Wales’ capital are invariably surprised by its breezy cosmopolitan character, its wealth of Victorian buildings, its generous areas of city centre parkland and its superb Civic Centre. Before the beginning of the 19th Century Cardiff was little more than a village, and the city’s growth came with the opening of the docks to export the wealth from the nearby iron and coal producing valleys.

Cardiff is today a city of fine shopping arcades, pleasant parks and interesting sights. Cardiff Castle is a huge fortress covering nearly nine acres; part Roman camp, part medieval stronghold and part Victorian mansion! The castle was restored by the 3rd Marquess of Bute, a coal and shipping magnate in the second half of the 19th century. Other city features include the Morgan and Royal Arcades-canopied Victorian and Edwardian arcades packed  with shops selling everything from fashion to food. The Royal Arcade dating from 1856, is Cardiff’s oldest whilst the Morgan Arcade with its pretty first floor Venetian windows was built in 1896.

This weekend coincides with the opening fixture of the Autumn Rugby Internationals 2018 with Wales against six nation rivals Scotland at the Principality Stadium. Please note that tickets to the rugby match are not included in the holiday cost.
