Christmastide at Abbey-Cwm-Hir Hall

also visiting Shrewsbury & Ludlow

Mid-Wales is rich in the purest of natural resources, many of which have shaped the livelihoods of the local people for centuries. Stretching up as far as Southern Snowdonia and reaching down the coast to Cardigan and across to the Brecon Beacons, the area is steeped in heritage, culture and stunning scenery. The prosperity of Llandrindod Wells grew from its days as a popular Victorian Spa and in Rock Park the pump room has been restored so that visitors can once again “take the waters”. The town is situated seven hundred feet above sea level and surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Wales and it is one of Britain’s special hidden treasures.

Built in 1834 for Thomas Wilson the great Victorian improver, the Hall was doubled in size in 1869 by the Phillips family. The Hall is one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic revival architecture in Wales, a Grade II listed building standing in a truly wonderful location set in 12 acres of private grounds and overlooking St. Mary’s church and the ruins of the 12th century Cistercian “Abbey of the Long Valley”. Paul and Victoria Humpherston bought the Hall in 1997 and spent ten years restoring it to the Gothic Victorian splendour which you see today. Their achievements have been featured on numeruous TV programmes including Coast and Country, Discovering Welsh Houses, The Antiques Road Trip and Secret Dealers have been filmed at the Hall.

During the Christmas season all of the Hall’s 52 rooms and corridors are lavishly decorated with Christmas themes and a visit to this Victorian gem makes for a truly memorable experience .The guided tour is made with a difference; you are shown around by one of the family who own and live in the Hall and access is allowed to all the rooms in the house. Get a feeling of what it must have been like to live here during Victorian times; original tiled floors, marble fireplaces, magnificent china collections, super four-poster beds, wonderful paintings, book collections and plenty of memorabilia. Within the grounds there is a walled garden, terraces and woodland (not open during the winter season). Please note that whilst within the Hall, visitors are required to walk in their socks; no shoes allowed but you may bring your own slippers! Refreshments will be available at the conclusion of the tour.

The Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells was built in 1896 and was originally the largest hotel in Wales with its central position making it the ideal location from which to discover mid-Wales and the Brecon Beacons. In keeping with the standards you would expect of a 4 star hotel the Metropole incorporates traditional spacious lounges, contemporary bars, restaurant, lift and fabulous spa with an 18 metre swimming pool, thermal suites, Jacuzzi and gym. All bedrooms have en-suite bathroom, toiletries, flat screen TV and tea/coffee making facilities.

Tuesday: A leisurely departure this morning as we travel to Llandrindod Wells making a stop en-route in Shrewsbury with time for lunch. Later we continue the journey southwards via Knighton and the Radnor Forest arriving at the hotel late afternoon. Settle into your room and enjoy your evening meal.

Wednesday: After breakfast, some time this morning to explore the town and perhaps grab an early lunch. At approx. 12.30hrs we join the coach and travel the short journey northwards to Abbey-Cwm-Hir Hall where we are booked in at 13.30hrs. After an enjoyable afternoon tour we return to the hotel.

Thursday: This morning we bid farewell to Llandrindod Wells and retrace our route eastwards via Knighton and continue to the market town of Ludlow. This medieval walled town was orginally founded in the 11th cenutury and is centred on a hill atop which stands Ludlow Castle and the parish church of St.Laurence’s, the largest in the county. Time here to explore this lovely town and which today is also hosting a Christmas themed market. Later we continue the homeward journey.
