Itinerary*

Monday: Travel to Folkestone arriving at the hotel late afternoon. Settle into your room before enjoying your evening meal.

Tuesday: Today we visit the historic city of Canterbury which is dominated by the oldest Cathedral in England. The Cathedral, the ruins of St.Augustine’s Abbey and St. Martin’s Church are a designated World Heritage Site and we start our day in the city by visiting the Cathedral and admire the magnificent architectural splendour. Later we spend the afternoon at leisure exploring the city centre with its quaint medieval and Tudor buildings and the picturesque River Stour where boat trips are available from King’s Bridge.

Wednesday: After breakfast we travel to Dover and to the castle which has stood guard over the shortest sea crossing between England and the Continent for over a thousand years. Here we tour the fully furnished 12th century royal palace and experience the secret wartime tunnels where we learn about the story of the 1940 “Miracle of Dunkirk” using film and archive photography. We then take a guided of the separately accessed Underground Hospital.

Thursday: This morning we make the short transfer to Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Station where we board the the half hour train journey to New Romney Station. The railway has been operating since 1926 and on arrival at New Dymchurch we rejoin the coach and continue to the pretty Cinque Port of Rye. The town has enchanting cobbled streets, the medieval St. Mary’s Church and the fascinating Ypres Tower which houses Rue Museum.

Friday: Depart Folkestone after breakfast and commence the homeward journey.
