Georgian Bath, Bristol, Glastonbury & Wells

Discover Somerset…

Discover Somerset on this lovely five day break and take in some of the county’s stunning scenery and also enjoy visits to the historic Roman city of Bath; Bristol, home to the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge and Glastonbury, known as the cradle of Christianity in England and reputed to be the burial place of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. This tour is based in Street, the famous Somerset town long associated with the production of footwear and where the famous Clarks company established its factory in 1825. Today the company still has its headquarters in the town and although shoe production has long since moved overseas, Street is now home to the Clarks Shopping Village which attracts millions of visitors each year. The town is also famous for its Millfield School, popular with sportsmen and women.

Accommodation

The Wessex Hotel is situated on Street’s High Street and close to the Clarks Village. Hotel facilities include restaurant, lounge, dance floor, bar, lift and all bedrooms have private bathroom, satellite TV, telephone and tea/coffee makers.

Itinerary*

Monday: Travel southwards via the motorways to arrive at the hotel in Street late afternoon. Settle into your room and enjoy your evening meal.

Tuesday: Today we visit the wonderful city of Bath. First Iron Age peoples, later the Romans and later still the fashionable society of the 18th and 19th centuries were attracted to Bath, to partake of the famous waters. As long ago as AD78 Bath was
a thriving spa and during the 18th century it was a showpiece of Georgian prosperity. The best way to enjoy the city is to stroll through its streets and view the beautiful crescents, Roman Baths and Museum, Pump Room, Abbey Church, the amazing Pulteney Bridge or follow in the footsteps of Jane Austen at the centre dedicated to her life.

Wednesday: Today we visit the spirited town of Glastonbury with its long history and rich traditions. Not only is Glastonbury the cradle of Christianity in England but the medieval Abbey is also reputed to be the burial place of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. Steeped in history, Wells is England’s smallest city and one of the most beautiful. Visit the Gothic-style cathedral dating from the 12th century, the Bishop’s Palace and the Vicar’s close.

Thursday: Today we travel to Bristol; see Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s famous Clifton Suspension Bridge, set on the cliffs of the Avon Gorge. Perhaps indulge in some retail therapy in Cabot Circus, a fabulous shopping centre right in the heart of the city and a must see in Bristol is Brunel’s SS Great Britain. Built and launched in Bristol in 1843, it was a maritime masterpiece and was the world’s first ocean-going, propeller driven iron ship. The historic vessel is being conserved under a “glass sea” in the very dockyard where she was built. Visitors are encouraged to experience what life was like for her Victorian passengers and crew, including a visit to a three-storey tall moving engine (admission is at extra cost payable at the venue). On our return journey we travel via Cheddar Gorge, Britain’s largest gorge and a place of wild and rugged beauty.

Friday: After breakfast we bid farewell to the hotel and travel homewards.
