Magnificent Mayo

Archill Island, Keel, Sligo, Foxford Woollen Mills & Hennigen’s Heritage Centre

By popular request we have arranged another super value holiday with single travellers in mind with sole occupancy
bedrooms having no single room supplement and including four nights accommodation with dinner, bed & breakfast.
Persons who prefer to share a twin or double bedroom are most welcome to join this tour!

Ballina is an attractive town situated on the River Foy, famous for being the “salmon capital of Ireland”, and it is an
excellent base from which to explore the delights of County Mayo and County Sligo. This tour offers superb value, as
well as a varied itinerary that offers something for everyone; culture, history and breathtaking scenery.

At the time of publication of this leaflet, Passports are not a requirement for British Citizens visiting the Irish Republic, however the Irish Authorities have indicated that this policy is to change in the future and passengers are therefore recommended to carry a valid Passport or photographic I.D. e.g. photo driving licence with them on this holiday.
Further information can be obtained from the UK Passport Office and/or main Post Offices.

Accommodation

The 3 star family owned Downhill Inn Hotel is located on the edge of Ballina approx. a twenty minute walk from the town centre. The owners provide a truly warm welcome and great hospitality for their guests and hotel facilities include open plan reception, restaurant and bar and all bedrooms have en-suite bathroom, TV, telephone and tea/coffee maker. Please note that the hotel does not have a lift but there are ground floor bedrooms available.

Itinerary*

Monday: Early morning departure to Holyhead where we board the 08.55hrs ferry service to Dublin port. We disembark and continue westwards via Longford and Boyle arriving at the hotel early evening. Settle into your room and enjoy your evening meal.

Tuesday: This morning we travel to Westport, one of Ireland’s most beautiful towns and voted the best place in Ireland to live. The streets of Westport are lined with fine Georgian architecture and have an unusual layout centred on “The Octagon”. The town is noted for its traditional pubs including Matt Molloy’s, named after the flutist from The Chieftans.

Wednesday: Today we discover the magic of County Mayo. We begin the journey along the shores of Lough Conn and Lough Cullen, through Newport and Mulranny and take the bridge across to charming Archill, Ireland’s largest island. We make a stop in Keel before continuing on the Atlantic coastal drive. Returning to Ballina via Castlebar.

Thursday: Today we enjoy a visit to Sligo with its rugged landscapes and fantastic scenery. Here we follow the Yeates trail and revisit the sights and scenes that inspired some of the most beautiful poetry and paintings of the 20th century. We call in at the Foxford Woollen Mills and take a guided tour through the visitor centre as it recounts the story of the woollen industry. Here we can enjoy lunch at leisure and have time for some retail therapy. This afternoon we travel the short distance to Hennigan’s Heritage Centre which is situated near Swinford, overlooking Creagaballa Lake. Here we meet our guide and learn how his family survived
on less than 10 acres of poor land for nearly 200 years. During this fascinating visit we enjoy tea and scones before returning to Ballina.

Friday: After an early breakfast we bid farewell to the hotel and retrace our route to Dublin port. We board the 15.10hrs afternoon ferry service to Holyhead. After disembarking we arrive back in the local area at approximately 21.00hrs. (All ferry timings are subject to alteration).
