Burns Night Celebration! Newcastle upon Tyne

4* Gosforth Park Hotel

North East England is an area rich in history, industrial heritage and beautiful countryside. Newcastle is the regional capital and was established as a minor fort and bridge on Hadrian’s Wall, which started from neighbouring Wallsend.

Newcastle established itself as a market town and seaport and its nearby coalfield was the first to be worked in England and the first to export coal. By the 19th Century the city was famous as a centre for heavy engineering with ship building being its foremost industry. The city has many landmarks, the most famous being its great bridges that overshadow the water front, the earliest of these being the High Level for road and rail, flung across the Tyne Gorge by Robert Stevenson in 1849. Today this University city is home to several museums and galleries and has some lovely parks and gardens including the huge Town Moor Park.

Burns Night is celebrated every year, on or close to the birth date of the bard Robert Burns who was born on 25th January 1759. The event celebrates Burns’ contribution to Scottish culture with his best known work being“Auld Lang Syne”. The celebration at the hotel commences with the evening meal with the “entrance of the haggis” on a platter and the host will then read the “Address to the Haggis”, an ode that Burns wrote to the famous Scottish dish and at the end of the address the haggis is ceremonially sliced in two pieces ready for the meal to begin. Later musical entertainment will be provided by the superb Northumberland Ceilidh Band.

The Holiday Inn Newcastle Gosforth Park Hotel is located in quiet grounds on the outskirts of Newcastle. The hotel provides excellent amenities with exceptional service and it’s facilities include lift, restaurant, lounge, bar and leisure suite with indoor swimming pool and gym. All bedrooms have en-suite bathroom, hair dryer, TV, telephone and tea/coffee maker.
