The Lodge Hotel is a 3* family run hotel located on the edge of Coleraine and is ideally
situated for touring the area. Hotel facilities include restaurant, lounge and bar and all bedrooms have en-suite bathroom, hair dryer, TV and tea/coffee maker. n.b. the majority of the bedrooms are located in an annexe building with covered access.

Monday: Early morning departure to Holyhead where we board the 08.55hrs ferry service to Dublin port. We disembark and continue northwards arriving at the hotel in Coleraine late afternoon. Settle into your room before enjoying your evening meal.

Tuesday: Today we board the train for the single journey from Coleraine to Derry. This journey was described by Michael Palin as “one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world”. Its route follows the River Foyle and heads into lush green countryside before arriving at the golden sands of Benone Strand. The track runs alongside the sands so there are spectacular views of one of the most unspoilt beaches in Ireland. On the opposite side we pass the maritime cliffs of Downhill and the impressive Binevenagh Mountain. We arrive in Derry and meet our guide for a fascinating walking tour of the only remaining completely walled city in Ireland. Built between1613 and 1618 the walls are approx. 1.5 km in circumference and form a walkway around the inner city. Derry claims to have Europe’s largest collections of cannons with 24 surviving and displayed throughout the city walls including the famous Roaring Meg! Following our guided tour there will be some free time at leisure to meander the compact streets and discover all that this fantastic city has to offer.

Wednesday: After breakfast we experience stunning scenery as we travel along the Antrim Coast. We arrive at the village of Bushmills where we visit the Old Bushmills Distillery, the oldest whiskey producer in Ireland. Here we enjoy an informative guided tour showing the processes used to manufacture the whiskey. Please note that there are numerous steps and the tour may not be suitable for visitors with restricted mobility. Later this afternoon we visit
the extraordinary Giant’s Causeway, the only UNESCO World Herirtage site in Northern Ireland. Flanked by the wild North Atlantic ocean on one side and a landscape of dramatic cliffs on the other, for centuries the Giant’s Causeway’s basalt stone columns have inspired artists, stirred scientific debate and captured the imagination of all who see it. The mystery and stories of the area are now explained in the award winning Visitor Centre. There is a shuttle bus available (at an extra charge) for the less mobile to gain access to the stones.

Thursday: This morning we make our way to one of Northern Ireland’s oldest and most beautiful estates, Glenarm Castle which is the ancestral home of the McDonnells, Earls of Antrim. The housekeeper and butler will take you on a tour of the private home of Lord and Lady Dunluce giving an insight into the fascinating history and life of the castle. There will be time to explore the walled garden, in its incomparable setting by the sea; perhaps enjoy refreshments in the charming tea room. Our return journey is all about the scenery as we travel along the Antrim coast back to the hotel.

Friday: After breakfast we bid farewell to the hotel and retrace our route back to Dublin. We board an afternoon ferry sailing to Holyhead and then continue the homeward journey.
