Springtime in the Lake District

  • Lakeside & Haverthwaite
  • Railway Windermere
  • Lake Cruise Lakeland Distillery
  • Sizergh Castl
  • Ullswater Lake Cruise
  • Bowness
  • Kendal and Keswick

England’s largest National Park contains many of the most picturesque lakes in England and the landscape inspired such famous poets as Wordsworth and Coleridge. Wordsworth called lakeland “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found” and few who have visited the area would disagree. The heart of the Lake District National Park has a grandeur all of its own, with massive crags and ridges, towering fells, deep green valleys with its labyrinths of lakes and rivers. This tour brings together
many of the very best attractions in the Lake District with relaxing cruises on Lake Windermere and Ullswater; a steam train ride on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway and also visits Grasmere, Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage, Bowness, Keswick, Sizergh Castle and Kendal.

The Cumbria Grand Hotel is located just six miles from Lake Windermere on the outskirts of Grange over Sands. Set in 20 acres of gardens and woodland over-looking Morecambe Bay, guests are assured of a very warm welcome at this charming three star rated Victorian hotel. Facilities include lift, restaurant, lounge, bar and snooker room whilst outside guests can enjoy some delightful woodland walks. All bedrooms have en-suite bathroom, satellite TV, telephone & hospitality tray.

Monday: Travel to Lancaster where time will be available for lunch and a stroll before continuing on to the hotel arriving late afternoon. Settle into your room and relax before enjoying your evening meal.

Tuesday: This morning we take a steam train ride on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway which travels through the breathtaking scener of the Leven Valley from Haverthwaite to the lakeside, situated at the southern tip of Lake Windermere. We then enjoy a cruise up the lake to Bowness. This afternoon we visit the Lakeland Distillery, Cumbria’s only distillery producing the Lakes Gin, Lakes Vodka; The One, a British Isles blended whisky and their signature spirit, the Lakes Malt. Opened in 2014 the distillery is housed in a beautiful restored Victorian cattle farm with hand made copper stills and an award winning on -site Bistro and visitor centre. We continue with a scenic drive along beautiful Coniston Water, the inspiration for Arthur Ransome’s novel “Swallows and Amazons”.

Wednesday: This morning we visit the historic market town of Kendal, famous for its narrow lanes and Kendal Mint Cake. Later we visit the National Trust’s, Sizergh Castle. Home to the Strickland family for over 750 years, the castle is set in acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and is furnished with fine English and French furniture.

Thursday: Start the day with a relaxing two hour morning cruise on spectacular Ullswater; Glenridding to Pooley Bridge). Renamed the Dark Lake, an Arthurian legend, Ullswater still holds many secrets with Helvellyn dominating the landscape. We continue to Keswick, a
small market town where there is an opportunity to visit the local craft and produce market.

Friday: After a leisurely breakfast we bid farewell to the hotel and travel southwards and visit Kirby Lonsdale a famously picturesque Cumbrian town, renowned for its photogenic charm and still retaining much of its age old appeal. The splendid historic buildings that line Kirby Lonsdale’s quaint streets now accommodate an impressive range of independant shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants which offer a unique experience that’s increasingly difficult to find on the modern High Street. We depart early afternoon and commence the homeward journey.
