Oban & The Isle Of Mull

The Firth of Lorne & Duart Bay

Oban is a very popular holiday resort and harbour, situated at the centre of Scotland’s western seaboard and is known as the “Gateway to the Western Isles”. Oban derives its name from the Gaelic meaning bay or creek and stands on the coast of Lorne opposite the northern end of the island of Kerrera, which guards the bay and which makes it a spacious harbour from where ferries sail to the islands of Mull, Lismore, Coll, Tiree, Barra and South Uist. Dominating the northern approach to the harbour is Dunollie Castle all that remains of the glories of the Lords of Lorne.

The vantage point of Pulpit Hill rewards the visitor with breathtaking views of the great sweep of the bay, the Firth of Lorne and the Sound of Mull. The town’s most famous attribute is known locally as MacCaig’s Folly, an attempted replica of the Colosseum.

Accommodation

The Columba Hotel is ideally situated in a prominent position within the town centre, near the Esplanade overlooking Oban Bay. The hotel has been refurbished and restored to its original Victorian glory and a warm welcome is accompanied by rich decor, good food and helpful service. Due to the Columba’s unique situation and style of construction almost all the 50 bedrooms enjoy wonderful open views of the town, the harbour, Oban Bay, McCraig’sTower and the islands. All bedrooms are equipped with private bathroom and tea/coffee making facilities. There is a restful lounge, popular lounge bar and a lift.
