Shetland & Orkney Adventure

Venture into the wild unspoilt landscape of northern Scotland and enjoy a real Highland adventure. Over 100 islands lie
some 200 miles north of Aberdeen and this fascinating area is famed for its rural lifestyle and traditions. We visit Lerwick on the Shetland Isles which have a dramatic history and character of their own and are an idyllic land of Viking legends, rich in bird and animal life. We also visit Orkney which was once ruled by the Norse and today still bears the
Scandinavian influences in island and farm names.
***We recommend passengers utilize a holdall style bag for the ferry services.
Accommodation
This tour utilizes Northlink Ferries service sailing from Aberdeen and facilities on board include restaurant, cafeteria, bar and lounges and accommodation will be in two berth cabins with en-suite shower/wc.
Itinerary*
Thursday: Travel northwards to Perthshire arriving in Pitlochry where we stay overnight at the Fishers Hotel with dinner, bed and Breakfast. This 3 star hotel is situated in the centre of the town and facilities include a lift, restaurant, bar and all bedrooms have en-suite bathroom, TV and tea/coffee maker.
Friday: After a hearty breakfast we continue our journey northwards travelling through the Cairngorm National Park Britain’s most vast mountain range. We arrive in Thurso staying overnight at The Royal Hotel with dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel is situated in a prime position in the heart of Thurso and facilities include a lift, restaurant, lounge and bar. All bedrooms have en-suite bathroom, hair dryer, TV and tea/coffee maker.
Saturday: An early start today as we take the ferry crossing to the mystical Orkney Isles. We meet our local guide who will escort us throughout our island visit. Our tour takes us by the Churchill Barriers whose construction was ordered by Winston Churchill following the tragic torpedoing of the battleship, Royal Oak in the Scapa Flow during1939. We visit Skara Brae which was uncovered after a storm in 1850. This ancient settlement is older than Stonehenge and the preserved rooms provide a unique insight into pre-historic human living. We visit Skaill House one of Orkney’s top tourist attractions and the finest mansion on the island and steeped in 5,000 years of history. We then visit the Ring of Brodgar to view the standing stones which were constructed around 2500–2000BC. We end our day on Orkney at Kirkwall where dinner will be provided at a local hotel. After dinner we board our overnight ferry to the Shetland Isles.
Sunday: Breakfast is included on the ferry as we arrive in Lerwick. We meet our guide for the day making our way southwards to the tip of the headland and visit the Jarlshof Pre-historic and Norse Settlement. This fantastically preserved ruin was only revealed after a storm at the end of the 19th century. Over 4,000 years of history are continued within the site and it provides an insight into life on the island. We return northwards towards the capital Lerwick where some leisure time will be available and to obtain lunch. This afternoon we journey to Scalloway Castle and Museum former home to Earl Stewart and dating from 1600. Later we board the overnight ferry to Aberdeen with an evening meal on board.
Monday: On arrival in Aberdeen, breakfast is served before disembarking and begin the final journey with a scenic drive through some of Scotland’s most picturesque countryside. We arrive at the King Robert Hotel, Stirling where we stay overnight with dinner, bed and breakfast. The hotel is situated on the site of the Battle of Bannockburn, just 1.5 miles from historic Stirling. Facilities include a restaurant, bar and all bedrooms have en-suite bathroom, hair dryer, TV and tea/coffee maker. There is a no lift at this hotel but ground floor bedrooms are available.
Tuesday: After breakfast we bid farewell to the hotel and travel homewards arriving back in the local area early evening.
